the trickle down

Wishful Thinking

This might be wishful thinking, but there are rumors bubbling of a new BlackAdder series being developed. There's nothing in the article from any of the writers or Rowan Atkinson, but such a revival might be interesting: the article.

Now to do something with my day.

This Whole Schiavo Thing

Terri Schiavo passed away this morning. The event hopefully brings with it the end of this story's dominance of the news. I really have a hard time believing that all of this has been worth all of this trouble. I believe Terri most likely did wish to be taken off of any form of life support. I wouldn't want to be sustained in that condition for more than a week, let alone fifteen years!

Right-to-lifers need to back off. I am sorry that Schiavo had to endure fifteen years of life supported by a feeding tube, but at what point do we realize we're no longer really living? Shiavo couldn't realize this herself because she was severely brain-dead. It became, then the task of her family to come to grips with the loss of their loved one. I can't imagine the difficulty associated with doing so, but it would become harder each day for me to see someone I loved in that state: unaware of their surroundings and living on a slow drip of salene and sugar.

Now there's talk of writing new laws that prevent "murders like this" from happening. Listen: Schiavo has been essentially dead for fifteen years. The removal of the feeding tube just gave her a means to pass on. If you believe in the afterlife, how could you also want to hijack someone's body and prevent them from moving to their next stage!? It's not supposed to be a matter of sustaining the body, is it? You're supposed to be concerned with the soul!

I hope you all saw South Park last night, because it implicates all of this news to hilarious results.

So, What Are Your Future Plans?

It was a very interesting end to winter and it's thus far been an interesting beginning to spring. A lot has happened, but it's hard to sum it all up - mostly because I've either chosen to forget it, have actually forgotten it, or don't feel like writing about it.

I've interviewed for a position as a hall director in the event that I am accepted to graduate school. I've applied to Delaware, Brown, Pennsylvania, and Drexel. I don't know where I actually expect to receive acceptance, especially considering I was towards the end of the application timeline on all of them. Should I be offered both graduate study and a hall director position at Delaware, I would gladly return for two more years of school. Hall directorship is something I've had in mind for a while now and provides an opportunity to continue residence life work before I become a full-time codemonkey. Hall directors receive full tuition remittance in addition to an apartment and healthyt stipend, which would give me a chance to complete my MS in two years, build up some bank, and hopefully hit the job market with an advanced degree at a better time to search.

In light of all of that, I am still sitting on a job offer from a software company in eastern Pennsylvania. Bentley has offered me employment in the server and web development division, which would put me working with all sorts of data and web interface technologies. It's fascinating work. I just felt the timing of my application process made me "jump the gun" a bit and look past the possibility of completing grad school.

I just today interviewed for an internship position at CNET Networks, working in their application server division (roughly that's the idea). Basically, the group I'd be working for develops the infrastructure on which all of the network sites are built. It's also pretty damn interesting. The search technologies they are developing sound really incredible, as do all of the factory methods and deployment strategies they work in. If graduate school happens (which I should be finding out about in the next two weeks), it would be ideal to have CNET give me a call, too. The office is in Bridgewater, about two miles down Rt. 22 from the high school. That would be a nice opportunity to spend the summer at home - something I might need.

Speaking of, I'm on spring break this week (I know - much later than any reasonable college) and have been spending the first half of my week off at home. It's been extremely comfortable to be with mom and dad and relax a bit, because school as really causing lots of stress heading into the break. The end of this week, I'll be heading down to Ocean City, MD to spend the weekend in a 90's-themed party with Kaes, Danielle, and friends. HT will be there, too, spending some time with Amy. It should be a fun time to kick back heading into the final stretch of my undergraduate career.

And on the horizon: hopefully catching Weezer on their way through Philadelphia at the Electric Factory in May, unfortunately missing the Bloc Party concert in early April, finishing up my schoolwork, completing the recording of the Monica's Ghost album, possibly learning guitar, and hopefully having fun.

We'll see.
